Each adipocyte is occupied by a single lipid droplet primarily formed by triglycerides. Adipocytes are some of the largest cells in the human body. Adipose connective tissue forms a thick layer under the skin in certain body areas and it functions as an insulating layer and as a reserve energy source. - SEM
