Human Papilloma Virus capsid. The genome is closed circular double-stranded DNA. Papillomaviruses replicate exclusively in keratinocytes (outermost layers of the skin) as well as some mucosal surfaces (inside of the cheek or the walls of the vagina). About a dozen HPV types can lead to cervical, anal, vulvar, penile, and lung cancers. Vaccines are available to prevent infection by some HPV types. Rendering is colored by radial depth-cue to highlight surface topography. View is along the 2-fold icosahedral symmetry axis. Individual small spheres are atoms making up the proteins.
