An under-ice research device being lowered into the Arctic Ocean. The 6200-pound steel-framed, open-sided box will be towed behind the icebreaker on a reinforced fiber-optic cable that relays commands down from and data up to the ship. It is equipped with camera and lighting systems, thrusters to maneuver and hover the over seafloor sites, and two hydraulically operated sampling systems.
